Why you should visit “La Sentina” Natural Reserve in San Benedetto Del Tronto.
Before discovering all the other extraordinary wonders of Sentina, we want to tell you why it is worth visiting this wonderful place, so close to us. La Sentina is a protected natural area, recognized in 2004 as a Regional Nature Reserve and a Site of European Interest due to its rich and rare biodiversity (Natura 2000 Network). A land of water and sand, where the soft dunes that run along the sea join the landscape behind the dunes, meeting the small marsh lakes of the wetland area. This is the ideal habitat for as many as 180 species of birds (recorded to date), such as the plover: a protected species, which stops here to lay its eggs on the sand. Spontaneous vegetation typical of Mediterranean saline environments grows in this area, such as glasswort.
“La Sentina” Natural Reserve extends over an area of approximately 180 hectares within the municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto (AP), between the town of Porto d’Ascoli (to the north) and the Tronto river (to the south). Inside “La Sentina”, there is a comfortable naturalistic route on the plain, between reeds and countryside, to be done on foot or by bicycle (free use of bikes with BeSuite). Even those on holiday with small children can easily follow this path: just use a stroller with large wheels. In the center of the Reserve, stands the “Port Tower”: a fort dating back to 1547, which served as a watchtower to defend the coast from attacks by pirates and bandits. This building has an important historical value: it is, in fact, one of the few remaining examples of fortifications dating back to the 16th century in the entire Marche region.

Silence: Nature is speaking.
As you walk along the path of “The Sentina” Natural Reserve, you will find some terraces dedicated to birdwatching. These are wooden stations, overlooking the natural lakes of the Reserve, with information panels on the local avifauna and slits for spotting birds. Now, whether you have binoculars, a camera (or simply your eyes), prepare for a breathtaking sight. For example, you might spot a black-winged stilt (symbol of the Sentina), while fishing with its long beak. Hearing the love call of a pair of coots as they skim the surface of the water at sunset. Admire a gray heron as it spreads its wings in majestic flight. Or glimpse an European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) – reintroduced and protected here – dragging its shell onto land.
